Domestic violence(DV) : Defined as the physical, psychological or emotional maltreatment of an individual by another
family member or significant other. DV not only effects the adult members of a family, but frequently involves
children, in fact approximately 50% of batterers have or will abuse the child/children in the home. Besides the
direct effects, children are also affected by witnessing the event(s). DV effects both heterosexual and homosexual
relationships. In some states, healthcare personnel are required to report suspected cases of abuse to authorities.
Domestic violence screening is required by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Learn
how to recognize it, document injuries, assess for dangers, support victims and work with the community to prevent it.
